There is a common misconception that the most important part of a jump shot has to do with your elbow, hands and follow thru. While these are all important components of a great jump shot, every shot must start with your feet.
When shooting, the first thing you need to focus on is making sure you have 10 toes pointed at the basket. When your toes are pointed to the rim your knees, hips, and shoulders will also be in line with the hoop.
In our Chair Shooting Series, we are working on coming into our jump shot from an angle. Really focus on stepping into your jump shot low, getting your 10 toes pointed to the rim, and generating power with your legs from your lowest point up thru your follow thru which should be held at the highest point of your shot. Shoot from the ground up.
To build a great jump shot, repetition is the key. Make sure you are focusing on proper footwork, working with a sense of urgency, and shooting the same (and correct) way every time.
We are big proponents of charting your shots. Count your makes not your takes. The best shooters are in great basketball condition so push yourself and don't stop when you are tired. The mark of a great shooter is the player who can still knock down shots in the 4th quarter as well as they can in the 1st quarter!
